Studio Classrooms Overview
Introduction
The operation of each DEN classroom studio is very much like a standard classroom with the addition of considerable technology. For this reason, you will be assigned a student control room operator to handle much of this technology allowing you to devote more time to instruction. DEN is very flexible in accommodating different teaching styles and needs. Click here for a video demonstration. Please see one of the Network Control supervisors at any time to arrange a tour and training in our studio classrooms.

Control Room Operators
Your student control room operator is supervised by one of our Network Control staff supervisors. Your camera operator will post his/her name on the control room window and introduce him or herself to you before the first class session. Your operator will need to know your preferences (e.g. if you prefer to take live phone calls at any point in the class or just at certain times). Your control room operator performs the following duties:

  • Controls Cameras and Instructional Presentation Sources
  • Adjusts levels as needed
  • Alerts you of incoming phone calls
  • Alerts you of beginning and end times (5 minute warning) for class and recordings

If you have any concerns about your operator, please inform a Network Control Supervisor or Manager at networkcontrol@den.usc.edu or (213) 740-0130 or OHE 100.

Live Interaction
DEN students can call directly into the studio classrooms with their questions during the course. You will hear the student from the speakers mounted on the walls. Multiple students can participate with the studios via phone conferences, teleconferencing equipment, online chats, and desktop sharing applications. In addition, several methods exist to allow your remote students to control the instructional computers to do presentations. These other conference options are not readily available and must be requested ahead of time. For more detailed information on interacting with your DEN off campus students, click here. This link will also cover guidelines for teaching classes with DEN students.

Five-Minute Warning
Because we must maintain a tight class schedule, we will give you a five-minute verbal warning prior to the end of class. It is important that we take your class off-air at the scheduled time in order to accommodate the next class.

Pretaping Procedures
On occasion, you may need to set up a pretaping if there is a conflict with your normal class time. There are also cases where professors need to record an extra lecture session. Contact any network control supervisor in OHE 100 or 213-740-0130 to schedule a pretaping or extra session. Pretapings are only available to DEN courses. We will not honor any requests for outside courses or departments.
Policies:

  • A maximum of two week's worth of pre-taped lectures may be used for pretapings and extra sessions
  • ISE professors MUST get approval from the department chair before scheduling a pretaping
  • Network Control will schedule pretapings and extra sessions according to time constraints, room availability, and staffing.
  • Please be aware that a minimum attendance requirement exists for all faculty, in regards to the class time listed in the USC Schedule of Courses. DEN will not support the misuse of the pretaping option and reports all pre-tape summaries to Dean's office at the end of the semester.

Document Support
If you have notes that needs to be posted online, especially handwritten notes, you can drop them off with our Document Support Center in OHE 142 after your class. Electronic notes, such as Smart Board or Power Point that needs to be posted online as PDF files can be saved in your class folder on the instructor computer. These folders are networked and provides access to the Document Support staff for getting your notes. You must save these notes and put them in the appropriate directory after class though. The Document Support Center also handles all DEN student faxes for incoming and returned homework. You should check OHE 142 regularly for student submissions. Click here to find out more information about the Document Support Center.

Online Course Management System
Most of your classroom lecture becomes digitized and put online in DEN's Online Course Management System. Course videos are placed here as well as digitized notes. Instructors have control over these online courses as well and can post their own notes, announcements, etc. If you do not know or been assigned a logon to this portal yet, please contact our administrative offices at OHE 108, denadmin@usc.edu, or 213-740-4488. You can get more information about DEN's E-Learning Portal by clicking here.

DVD Archive Request
DEN can provide each professor with one DVD of his or her course taught each semester. DVD's will only contain materials captured by DEN for your course. These materials are restricted to: Video lectures and course documents processed by our Document Center. Contact the webcast department in OHE 118, call 213-821-1321, or webclass@usc.edu to request the copy.
To receive a DVD of a course taught by another professor, we must get authorization from that professor. Make the request to webcasting, and we will contact the professor for permission to duplicate.
