SMART Board Guidelines

At first glance, the Smart Board may look daunting... Do not worry- everything is fairly simple once you get the basics. Hopefully, by following some of these guidelines, you can utilize the SMART Board to help better enhance the teaching environment in your classroom.

What is SMART Board?

It is an interactive/touch-sensitive board, similar to a chalk or whiteboard, but with new advances. In addition to utilizing markers and an eraser, you can electronically write your notes and comments in a format that could be saved from page to page. An added advantage is the ability of the SMART Board to allow computer input and software to be displayed (eg: PowerPoint and Excel.)

Step One: Understanding the SMART Board Layout.

There are four Marker pens. They can emit Black, Red, Blue, or Green, depending on which one you use. If you happen to make a mistake, there’s a handy Eraser to eliminate those unwanted marks. (Note: You can only use one item, Pen(s) or Eraser, at a time.)

Step Two: Using the Notebook.

To open the Notebook/whiteboard feature, click on the SMART Board Icon

Then click on Notebook and the writing the program should open.

The Notebook acts just like a normal chalk/whiteboard. You only have to write. But remember, the first time may feel different than writing on an ordinary board. Writing on the SMART Board usually requires you to press a little firmer.

When you come to an end of a board full of writing, you don’t have to erase it completely and start over.

You can merely press BLANK on the left hand side of the panel and a new blank page will appear. Simply continue writing and add additional blank pages as needed.

Additional advantages include, the ability to go back and forth between pages (Such as: notes from an early page).

Simply find the SLIDE on the right side of the panel and touch. The page will appear for viewing, changing, correcting or writing new notes.

Step Three: Computer Software Interaction.

In addition to writing, the SMART Board has the ability to work with software, such as Powerpoint and Excel. Merely, open the file(s) from the computer and the Smartboard will display it.

From there you can write over your slides and notes, and make any additional comments and changes.

Since the SMART Board is interactive and touch sensitive, you can move/skip to the next slide by merely touching the board.

Or you could use the ARROWS, left and right, to move between slides. The keyboard and the mouse of the Computer are additional methods to progress through the slides.

Step Four: Save Your Work.

By the end of class, remember to save, so your student will be able to access the notes if need be. (To Save: Go to File, Save As, save in My Documents folder, look for your course folder, and NAME your file. Then hit Save. *If you do not see your course folder, create a new one.)

Step Five: Questions or Concerns.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the SMART Board, feel free to ask your Camera Operator or one of the Supervisors in Network Control (OHE 100). They will be more than helpful with your problems or needs.

If you would like to learn more about SMART Board you can visit their site at: http://www.smarttech.com.

SMART Board Software

SMART Board software is also available for you to download at their website. Their software will allow you to edit and create smartboard notes outside of our classrooms.
