PowerPoint Guidelines

As more students turn to webcasting as their preferred distance learning vehicle, DEN wants to ensure the presentations captured on-screen are as legible as possible since most computer monitors are significantly smaller in size than TV monitors. We've prepared some new guidelines about PowerPoint presentations for you, and we also have webcast-ready templates created for you to download. If you have any questions or need help converting your current PowerPoint slides to make them webcast-ready, do not hesitate to contact us.

To download and print a copy of these guidelines, click here (PDF).

PowerPoint Slide Guidelines

  • Presentations should have a plain colored background (please stay away from the "busy" ones with a lot of design in the background) - DEN has templates available for your convenience.
  • Keep a one inch (minimum) border all the way around each slide.
  • Lines, especially horizontal lines, need to be at least 4pts thick.
  • Slide titles = 30pt. ARIAL BLACK, ALL CAPS
  • Text body = 30pt. Arial (bolded) with an absolute minimum of 24pt for regular text
  • Chart or graph labels = 18pt Arial minimum
  • It is better to have two (or more) slides rather than one very content-heavy one.
  • Materials copyrighted by anyone other than the author may not be used (cartoons, photocopied articles, etc.)

General Guidelines

  • Although it depends on the density of each slide and how quickly you talk, the average number of slides is 25 per hour.
  • If you are bringing personal computers or other equipment, it should be tested for compatibility in advance.
  • For computer-based demonstrations / presentations, we recommend setting the cpmuter resolution at 1024x768.
  • Programming Code: It is almost impossible to set up a computer so that programming code is readable on-screen. The best solution is to make the code available as a printable document included in the student noteset.
  • Software Demonstration: All print smaller than 24pt font will not be readable. If possible, provide appropriate screenshots in the noteset.
  • If you are showing websites, please provide the full URL information in the noteset.
