DEN Online Course Management System
Online Course Management System
DEN provides an Online Course Management System to provide DEN off campus students access to various materials. These materials include lecture videos and notes and access to DEN services like document processing. On campus students also get access to archived lecture videos and notes for DEN courses they are enrolled in. This Course Management System also allows faculty to manage documents, announcements, etc.

Course Lecture Videos
Each lecture is webcast/streamed for live viewing by off campus students on the DEN web site. Upon completion, the webcast group will post each lecture to the archive section of each course page. Lectures are usually up within 15 minutes of completion, but if problems persist with the streaming file, there may be a delay of three hours for availability.

Click here for minimum software and hardware requirements for webcast viewing. Click here to view a demo featuring DEN’s webcasting capabilities. It is recommended that you also view your lecture videos to see if any changes in teaching or capturing methods are needed. Archived course lecture videos are available throughout the duration of the semester.

Slide Captures
Your camera operator will capture slides of all new images during the lecture. However, you are welcome to instruct them to capture specific images. Often instructors using Power Point can email the file to dennotes@usc.edu for conversion for slide captures and Smart Board use. Another area of usefulness for the encoding application is URL forwarding. Instructors can have students navigate live web sites while viewing the lecture video. Instructors will need to provide the students with the full URL prior to class.

The slide captures are synchronized with the archived videos. Please review the webcast demo to familiarize yourself with the slide synchronization of the webcasts. It is also important that you provide unobstructed views with little or no motion of graphics you want captured.

Click here for guidelines on using Power Point slides for your notes.

Blackboard
The Distance Education Network now integrated Blackboard Learning System 6.1 into our Course Management System for faculty and students. By incorporating Blackboard into our services, DEN feels more tools will now be available to our faculty and students while online. Click here for the instructor manual for Blackboard with instructions on using the new tools. Please note, DEN's Blackboard system functions independently of the USC learn.usc.edu Blackboard system. If you have a course hosted on DEN's Blackboard system and another course on learn.usc.edu, DEN can host the learn.usc.edu course for convenience.

Accessing the Course Management System

Faculty and Students
From DEN's home page, click on the logon link to access DEN's Course Management System. After logging on, faculty and students will see a list of courses they are teaching and enrolled in. Click here for an overview of all the tools available in our Blackboard system.

Students
DEN off campus students will need to have a valid profile before getting access to DEN's Course Management System to access their courses. On campus students will have their profiles automatically created for them. Students can get detailed instructions by going to DEN's home page and clicking on their appropriate links. DEN synchronizes student data with the University's Student Information Systems (SIS). Therefore there are several policies regarding course availability and access that you should be familiar with. You can click here to see a summary of these policies.

Teaching Assistants and Graders
There have been a lot of questions regarding setting up access for your teaching assistants and graders to DEN’s course management system. You can send an email to denadmin@usc.edu with your teaching assistant names, student ID number, and courses. Once our administrative group gets that information, they will place those students into your courses as teaching assistants or graders.
