USC Viterbi School of Engineering

The Basics

Systems Engineering Program
provided by the University of Southern California
and the University of Missouri-Rolla

Program Goals

This program is designed to provide graduate engineers and engineering managers with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary for the conception and implementation of complex systems. The emphasis is on the processes by which complex systems are conceived, planned, designed, built, tested and certified. The systems engineering experience can be applied to defense, space, aircraft, communications, navigation, sensor, computer software, computer hardware, transportation and other aerospace and commercial systems and activities.

Engineers with a firm grounding in an engineering discipline and work experience will learn tools and approaches for confident decision making in the complex technical environment of today’s corporations. Instructors with exceptional academic, professional, and industrial credentials teach within the program.

How It Works [top]

A Master of Science degree program consisting of 10 three-unit courses and a Graduate Certificate program consisting of 5 three-unit courses are offered. The Graduate Certificate program may be followed by 5 additional three-unit courses to complete the M.S. degree program.

Students must enroll at either UMR or USC and must satisfy that university’s admission requirements. Enrollment may be either full time or part time. Students may take all courses from the university in which they have enrolled, or may transfer one course (three units) from the other university for the certificate program, and up to three courses (nine units) from USC to UMR and up to one course (4 units) from UMR to USC for the Master’s program.

Most courses are scheduled in the late afternoon or evening hours. Courses are delivered live from the two campuses via the Internet. Homework and class notes are transmitted via the student portal and e-mail, and exams are generally proctored at a local testing center. Boeing students near UMR campuses or the USC campus can choose to take courses on campus. Many courses in this program are also provided to Boeing employees world-wide through real-time interactive transmission via microwave, satellite and the Internet.

Each university will provide academic advisement and other student services to meet specific needs of its Boeing students to facilitate their participation in the program.

This program is provided in addition to other programs available from the universities.
