USC Viterbi School of Engineering

DEN Overview
Established in 1972, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering's Distance Education Network was a pioneer in the distance learning arena, utilizing the most cutting-edge technology to enable professional engineers to take USC engineering courses for graduate degree credit without having to set foot on the campus.

Nearly 35 years later, DEN uses innovative e-learning technology to provide graduate education for its students throughout the United States and the world.

Benefits
By removing geographic and scheduling barriers, DEN allows engineering professionals the convenience of taking classes from their home or office. Participation in DEN provides companies with a powerful recruitment and retention tool, while giving them a competitive advantage as employees increase their knowledge and competencies by obtaining advanced degrees or professional development skills specific to their industry's needs.

How It Works
Courses are transmitted from studio classrooms at the USC campus via an extensive Internet-delivery system to enable students to access their classes anytime, from anywhere. Live instruction is interactive; students can ask questions and carry on discussions with the instructor by telephone (if watching live) or via threaded online chat discussions. Students communicate with professors via email outside of class hours. Class materials are transferred electronically or posted on the student's web portal.

Our Faculty
Most USC Viterbi School of Engineering instructors are full-time faculty who have earned the highest recognition in their fields. More than a third of its faculty are fellows in their respective professional societies. With 25 faculty members selected to the National Academy of Engineering, and 40 others who have earned Presidential Early Career, Presidential Young Investigator or NSF Young Investigator awards, the school ranks among the nation's very best in these important metrics for a school's present and future strength. Many faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering and fellows of IEEE and other respected professional organizations. By also serving as consultants to industry, faculty members are working in the forefront of today's emerging technologies.

Continuous Innovation
The best research does not come from a vacuum. It comes from an exchange of ideas, approaches, disciplines, from a meeting of minds in a school that encourages collaborative and innovative thinking. Because interdisciplinary projects cross traditional department lines, they need a unique setting in which to thrive: the research centers and institutes at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. The majority of our faculty are active in one or more of these innovative centers, which also contribute to a spirited graduate educational environment. DEN works in close collaboration with esteemed research centers such as the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) and the Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC) who provide test beds for advanced learning technologies, allowing DEN to exploit research technologies as they unfold.
